World Book Day is an annual event celebrating everything to do with books and reading, it has become renowned for the elaborate and competitive fancy dress costumes. The event is always held on the first Thursday in March, this year the event led by charity Unesco falls on Thursday, March, 4 and aims to encourage a love of reading in children and young people. The charity confirmed that the event will take place this year despite the current coronavirus pandemic, although things may feel slightly different this year there is still countless ways to mark the occasion both in schools and at home. The World Book Day organisation will be working with schools and nurseries again this year to distribute the £1 tokens with a new single-use digital version that has been adapted to suit the current situation. When is World Book Day 2021?

This year World Book Day falls on Thursday, March, 4, it comes around on the first of March every year. This year marks the 24th year that the event has been held and is acknowledged globally in over 100 countries across the world. However, other countries celebrate World Book Day on William Shakespeare's birthday which is April, 23.

What happens on the day and who takes part?

The World Book Day Organisation's mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. The day is a celebration of everything books including the authors, illustrators and the children who read them. Children of all ages come together to celebrate reading with the chance to dress up as their favourite literary character on the day. The aim of the event is to encourage more children to discover the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. The charity, along with National Book Tokens Ltd, offers an astonishing 15 million £1 book tokens to children nationally (one for nearly every child under the age of 18 in the country).
